I think the earthquake and the tsunami was very tragic. It killed loads of people some of them injured. We are lucky to not have any mountains around here and any seas or oceans. We are also lucky not to be in that kind of country but I think our country should be more sunny- just 1 negative thing. It caused damage to buildings and leading residents to evacuate their homes for higher ground to avoid tsunami waves.

A tsunami is faster than anything. It can knock you down in seconds. An earthquake takes it time to rumble but if you look at it when it rumbles it makes a big impact and can send any building down in seconds.

    2. Caused two deaths and mass evacuation.
    3. It was so intense, that it lifted the sea bed two metres above ground.
    4. More than 1,000 locals and tourists stranded by landslides, with two people reported dead, and dozens injured.
    5. It tore apart roads and buckled rail tracks.
    6. Triggering an estimated 100,000 landslides that will take months to remove.

Many people died and got seriously injured by the earthquake. The evacuation of the South Island coastal town of Kaikoura, without road access since the earthquake, is almost complete.Other tourists have left by chartering their own helicopters or having air transport provided by their embassy. Some have chosen to stay until an inland road reopens.

I think the earthquake and tsunami was very tragic. It lost many peoples lives and I know that we are fortunate not to have any mountains to cause an earthquake and no oceans or seas to cause a tsunami. If we were there we would be panicking from the first second so thats why we are lucky.

A tsunami goes approximately as fast as 200kph so you wouldn’t go in a car you would just stay at home. Tsunamis are made of water and if you go into the water for a long time then you could die because it isn’t our type.

An earthquake takes it time to rumble but the impact it makes is very big. Once it starts to rumble everything will start to go down from houses to apartments. I think most people in New Zealand has been killed some injured and I would feel sorry to them.

In central New Zealand a powerful tsunami with 7.8 magnitude struck early Monday morning. Fortunately, only two people were seriously injured. Leaving destroyed buildings, homes, roads and setting off strong aftershocks.

People living along the coast were told to move to higher ground with the firs huge wave already hitting the north east coast of south island. The tsunami threat was so powerful and so strong that people all over the country were warned to stay off all the beaches.

New Zealand has experienced 10 tsunamis which have struck above 5m since 1840.Some were caused by earthquakes but the majority of them were hit by seafloor quakes not far off the coast.

Tsunamis can arrive within minutes before making preparations to escape. Strong jolts were also felt in Wellington about 120 miles away (200km).

The quake ,which measured 7.5 in magnitude, led to waves up to two metres high, damaging safe environments.

  21. November 19th, 2016 at 5:51 pm      Reply Fatima G Says:

The quake hit just after midnight on Monday (11:02 GMT on Sunday), north-east of Christchurch.
It was felt as far afield as the capital Wellington on the North Island, 120 miles (200km) away.
A tsunami arrived about two hours later. Officials warned everyone along the eastern coast to head inland or for higher ground.
Police said one person died in the town of Kaikoura on the eastern coast, which has been cut off by road and where electric power is out and phones are down.
Another died in Mount Lyford, a ski resort nearby. It is not yet clear how they were killed.

A gauge at Kaikoura, 181 km (112 miles) north of Christchurch, measured a wave of 2.5m (8ft 2ins) in the early hours of the morning.
At one point, the ministry of civil defence suggested tsunami waves as tall as five metres could hit the eastern coast.
But just after 08:00 local time (19:00 GMT), the warning was scaled back to a “marine and beach threat” with waves of just one metre along a small stretch of coast.
Aftershocks continued throughout Monday morning. Many schools and offices stayed closed while engineers checked the buildings, and ferries and trains were cancelled.

A earthquake hit New Zealand just before midnight on Monday 14th of November. The quake struck the South Island, triggering hundreds of aftershocks and a small tsunami and leaving at least two people dead.

Roads were split apart. In the coastal town of Kaikoura, a popular whale-watching destination, many residents and tourists found their water and power supplies cut off.

“From all directions, Kaikoura has essentially been isolated,” Darryn Webb, the Acting Commander of New Zealand’s Joint Forces, said.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister, John Key, flew over Kaikoura by helicopter to view the destruction. Cars could be seen lying on their sides, and other parts of the road lay in ruins. “It’s just utter devastation,” Key said.

People aren’t the only ones in the area who were left stranded. Video footage shot from a helicopter showed three cows trapped on a small island of grass, surrounded by deep valleys of collapsed earth—the remains of a small field near Kaikoura that had been ripped apart during the quake.

The quake caused damage in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, on the southern tip of the North Island. Dozens were forced onto the streets as buildings were evacuated.

Australians Paul and Sandra Wardrop and their two children were on the 10th floor of the Park Hotel when they began to feel the shaking. “We felt that the building was going to collapse,” Sandra Wardrop said. “You could hear the sounds of the building shaking and see cracks appearing in the walls, in the plasterwork in the bedroom.”

After touring the affected area, Key said that the cleanup effort could run into the billions of dollars. He estimated that clearing away the debris and the blocked roads could take months.

Earthquake and tsunami in New Zealand:

The earthquake had destroyed many things in newzealand so did the tsunami. Tsunamies don’t really cause that much damage but there was one place where it caused a lot of damage and that place is called little pigeon bay. It affects the whole street. If it happens really close to you then you could suffer a really bad illness that might not go away. You should go away from the earthquake or tsunami as soon as possible and take everything with you like medication, clothing that covers your arm, bottled water and much, much more.

    tusnamis
New Zealand has experienced about 10 tsunamis higher than 5m since 1840. Some were caused by distant earthquakes, but most by seafloor quakes not far off the coast.Quite vulnerable. Tsunami hazard for the Pacific is higher than for other oceans because of the “Ring of Fire” – the zone of earthquakes associated with the tectonic plate boundary that bounds the Pacific. In New Zealand, scientists consider the tsunami hazard from two viewpoints – Pacific-wide events for which there will be some warning, and “near-source” tsunami generated by large offshore New Zealand earthquakes, landslides One of the main challenges facing tsunami researchers is that evidence of tsunamis does not stay in the landscape as it is eroded by natural processes. Impacts of past tsunami are therefore difficult to identify, unless someone was around and wrote about them at the time.

    earthquakes
A powerful earthquake struck New Zealand’s South Island early Monday, killing at least two people, causing damage to buildings and prompting emergency services to warn people along the coast to move to higher ground to avoid tsunami waves. The magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck in a mostly rural area close to the city of Christchurch but appeared to be more strongly felt in the capital, Wellington, more than 200 kilometers (120 miles) away. The quake was followed by a number of strong aftershocks. The quake knocked out New Zealand’s emergency call number, 111, for about 10 minutes, police reported. It caused items to fall from shelves and windows to break in Wellington, and forced hundreds of tourists onto the streets as hotels were evacuated.

There are many impacts the recent earthquake had on New Zealand . The country is unstable and keeps rocking. Also, the earthquake triggered a tsunami. After all of these natural disasters, there was a lot of damage. This ruined schools and children couldn’t be educated. Houses were broken so families and people had no shelter. Putting everything right costed a lot of money, so the country has less money.
